Artist John Collier was one of the premier portraitists of British society. This painting was the personal favorite of Darwin himself, out of all the likenesses of him done by various artists. In a bit of coincidence, Collier was the son-in-law of Thomas Huxley, biologist and early proponent of Darwinism and evolution.
