Japanese Artist and poet Yashima Gakutei, pupil of both Totoya Hokkei and Hokusai, was the illegitimate son of a samurai who became a virtuoso in the art of ukiyo-e, literally “pictures of the floating world”, woodblock prints of various genre subjects. In this work, “The Seven Sages in a Bamboo Grove,” the artist’s incredible talent for drawing with whimsy and emotion is profoundly evident.
