In the words of William Wordsworth, Lake Como is “A treasure, which the Earth keeps to itself.” Located in the heart of the Lombardy region of Italy, the majesty of Lake Como has attracted some of the most illustrious figures throughout history, including the English poet William Wordsworth, who used his rhythmic prose to capture the utter brilliance of the landscape surrounding the area. Wordsworth first arrived at Lake Como in 1790 while taking a walking tour through France and the Swiss Alps. You can read more of his journeys in his poems, Descriptive Sketches, published in 1793.rn

Lake Como itself is one of the deepest lakes in all of Europe and is the third-largest lake in Italy. The jagged shoreline is dotted with small, colorful villages that welcome visitors with homemade delicacies and quaint lodgings. The Lake Como ferry service is well connected and can help visitors travel the length of the lake to admire all of the small, unique towns that grace the shore. One of the most popular stops for visitors is the villages of Como and Bellagio. The latter is shaped like an inverted “Y” and is located at the conjunction of the two legs of the lake, so both sides of Bellagio are surrounded by water.

A Popular Retreat since Roman Times

Lake Como has been popular with the rich and famous for millennia. In the 1st century, A.D. Pliny the Younger built the Comedia and the Tragedia resorts. Today, Lake Como is still a popular destination for aristocrats and celebrities, with the likes of Madonna, George Clooney, and Richard Branson all visiting or owning a home on its shores. We think William Wordsworth said it best in his Descriptive Sketches of 1793 when he extolled the incredible beauty of the region and the "Fair, Dark-Eyed Maidens of the Lake." Bellissimo!
