Burning Man 2022, The Forbidden Planet of Incandescent Quiescence

There is a Forbidden Planet of Incandescent Quiescence in the middle of the Black Rock Desert, where only those who relinquish the dogma of the 21st Century hustle and embrace one’s spiritual bearings can then unite. Burning Man is a creative gathering of some of the most extraordinary individuals in the world, an experiment in social living reminiscent of a Mad Max movie, less the violence. For a moment in time, thousands of talented visionaries from every tribe and creed come together as brothers and sisters in a Utopian Mecca for the ages. From this higher plane, post-modern humanity in all its splendid glory begins to appear on the Black Rock while sacred objects begin to materialize from the desert floor. You’ve arrived through a portal in time to another world. You’ve entered the world of Burning Man.

Burning Man is located in Nevada’s High Rock Canyon National Conservation area, about 100 miles north of Reno. This vast open space was originally an ancient Pleistocene lake bed covering 300,000 acres, and no one could ever have predicted its ultimate fate as a hub of tremendous aesthetic value. This ceremony has been held here since its inception in 1986. Artist Larry Harvey inaugurated the event at San Francisco’s Baker Beach, constructing a 9-foot tall wooden model of a man and burning it as a bonfire with friends. Upon deciding to make this an annual tradition, they then began the legend of Burning Man. It is neither art nor a music festival, yet evocative of both; it is a makeshift community in the Black Rock Desert that encourages creative experimentation, individual participation, and self-expression.

This Unique Philosophy is Obvious Through the Style of Dress at Burning Man

This unique philosophy is evident through the style of dress at Burning Man, which can range anywhere from Mylar spacesuits to unicorn masks to winged goggles. Revelers, affectionately called “Burners,” eagerly partake in this psychedelic Halloween 2.0, donning clothing – or a lack thereof – that has never been seen before. There is no end to the creativity; most ensembles are custom-made, cost hundreds or thousands of dollars, and even delivered from other countries. However, all attendees follow the Burning Man principle of leave no trace, which ensures the cleanliness of the surrounding environment. The Black Rock Desert is a place where anything goes, where even the most outrageous garb will invoke stares of fascination rather than disdain. At this gathering, Burners do not gape in awe at the structures born off the desert floor; they all become as one.

Burning Man 2022 will be no different, other than all participants might be required to wear a Covid face mask. Radical Ritual, Burners will undoubtedly dress to the nines, as the motif discourages self-limitation. Its purpose is to avoid concrete beliefs and instead achieve a sacred, transcendent experience through immediate play and artistry. Participants will remake their unique and ritual world, allowing themselves to see truths without physical proof. Of course, Burning Man famously implements rituals through the annual temple construction and more, fulfilling the natural human need to belong to something bigger than ourselves. This August, Burners will share in this holy affair by providing an art installation, a performance, an interactive rite, or any other contribution they can dream of. Our personal choices and subsequent actions revive spiritual life, helping Burning Man remain a metaphysical adventure that leads to true exaltation.

This ethereal event will culminate with its most anticipated custom, the torching of “The Man.” Each year, on the Saturday of the festival week, Burners amass to incinerate a wooden effigy of the namesake, just as Larry Harvey first did back in 1986. His actions began something unstoppable, a social fellowship that started to and launched the world of Burning Man into the lexicon of the 21st century. This independent, inclusive and expressive society resulted in a completely open social system that allowed its participants to grapple with existential life choices through their attendance. There are no instructions here, no demands, so each participant must take the initiative to connect with themselves and the world. Only then can one have a pure and transformative Burning Man experience but be sure to stay tuned to revision dates due to Covid.
