Michelangelo was the preeminent Italian architect, painter, sculptor, and poet of the Renaissance era. He became famous for painting the Sistine Chapel Ceiling from 1508-1564. His exceptional skill and influence on the Western World had few rivals other than Leonardo da Vinci. His sheer output was prodigious and was one of the best-documented artists of the 16th century.
