Raffaello Sanzio was born in the small but artistically significant Central Italian city of Urbino, which at the time, was a cultural center that encouraged the Arts. A leading figure of the Renaissance, Raphael is best known for his "Madonnas", including the Sistine Madonna, and for his large fresco compositions like this Detail from the Apostolic Palace in Vatican City.
