Jacques-Louis David was the preeminent Neo-Classical painter in France in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. David felt that artists should discard the Rococo school’s playfulness and irony and rediscover the nobility and dramatic forms of the past, exemplified here in his portrait of Emperor Napoleon.
