Flemish portraitist and history painter Gonzales Coques was known as “Little Van Dyck”, so great was the more famous Dutchman’s influence on Coques. The idea of Coques as sole originator of Equestrian Portrait was challenged in this century by a Dutch art dealer, who attributes the landscape to Jan Wildens and the animals to de Vos.
