French Academic painter Louise Elisabeth Vigee Le Brun was the daughter of an artist, studied under Gabriel Briard, and was personally acquainted with contemporaries Vernet and Greuze. Le Brun was a court portraitist to Marie Antoinette and was forced to go abroad when Revolution threatened those of her class with death.
