Jean-Leon Gerome was a leading figure in the French Academic community and peerless in many forms of painting, whether history, portraiture, or this Orientalist genre. In our striking Mixed-Media painting, we see early Christian martyrs sacrificed in the name of entertainment to throngs of pagans in the Coliseum during the period of Roman persecution of the faithful.
