Flemish Golden Age painter Wallerant Vaillant pioneered the use of mezzotint, an innovative printmaking method that allows for higher quality and subtle contrasts, popular until the last century. A pupil of Erasmus Quellinus the Younger, Vaillant was a talented portraitist in the Mannerist style who rendered this rather somber-looking aristocratic lad against a dark backdrop.
