Haarlem-born Willem Claeszoon Heda was a virtuoso of the still-life genre. He began his career with an occasional “vanitas” or philosophical painting and settled for a time on late-breakfast pieces (“ontbijtje”), but ultimately became fond of producing inanimate renderings for the wealthy who pursued a decadent and gluttonous lifestyle.
