Nazarene School painter Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld followed the German Romantic artists committed to a rebirth of authenticity in religious motifs. His study with fellow disciples at the Vienna Academy and his appreciation of 15th-century Italian masters led to his adoption of a late Renaissance style.
