German painter Wilhelm Volker exemplified Biedermeier Realism in his art. A genre and landscape painter, Volker was also prolific at creating caricatures of the powerful. Here we see legendary St. Gall, unafraid of approaching bad weather, in one of his many miraculous adventures in old Germany, as he tried to convert the pagans to Christianity.
