Croatian-born Giovanni Squarcina Zara was a painter of religious subjects and portraits while active in Italy. In the last years of his life, Zara lost most of his eyesight and ultimately died penniless. The artist’s work here is a depiction of a young beauty in a Neoclassical style with connotations of a nymph or goddess.
