Anglo-American artist Benjamin West, called “The American Raphael”, was born in the colony of Pennsylvania, but took up residence in London, becoming President of the Royal Academy. The self-taught West produced history and literary scenes in a classical mode, such as this work showing the famous Naval-battle during the War of the English Succession.
