Junius Brutus Stearns was born in Vermont and aspired from an early age to be an artist. In 1838 he submitted his first painting title "The Millennium" to the National Academy of Design and Stearns soon became a renowned painter of domestic genre. These realistic portraits and sporting scenes quickly ensconced his stature on the larger American stage, c.1860.
