Anglo-American artist Benjamin West was born in the colony of Pennsylvania, but took up residence in London, becoming President of the Royal Academy. The self-taught West produced mainly history and monumental works, such as this somber Neoclassical portrait of a British soldier and diplomat Guy Johnson with the Mohawk chief Karonghyontye, also known as ‘David Hill’. A Mixed-Media painting.
