Some of Lin Fengmian’s early paintings were obliterated by Japanese conquerors during the Sino-Japanese War, and later works were eradicated in the Cultural Revolution – the artist himself destroyed many canvases after apologizing for political ‘crimes.' Here we see a typical Fengmian blending of Eastern and Western styles in his rendering of five Concubine.
