English artist Richard Earlom was a master mezzotinter, practicing the craft of printmaking from steel or copper plates after roughening some areas for darkening and smoothing other spots for lightening the image. The artist’s “Thames Iron Forge” is representative of the technical innovation that was turning England into an industrial colossus in his lifetime.
