Vinchon was a French academic painter who studied art in Rome from 1800-1814. He won the most prestigious Prix de Rome in 1814. On his return from Italy, he was commissioned to paint frescoes of Saint Maurice and his companions killed by the Roman army. St. Maurice, St. Candide and St. Exupère refused to sacrifice to false gods in the chapel of St. Joan of Arc (formerly dedicated to St. Maurice) of the church of Saint-Sulpice in Paris.
